Powerful Locals Returns!
By Cortney Marabetta, Communications Specialist
Powerful Locals is the process by which our locals become informed, engaged, and activate their membership. It is the process by which locals become powerful - on their campuses, in their communities, in Washington state. A local with an informed, engaged, activated membership is powerful.
This summer, our biennial Powerful Locals leadership training returns! Join us at The Evergreen State College. We will have main tracks on contract bargaining and management and membership engagement and growth, as well as workshops on topics including using our union contracts to support marginalized workers in our union, writing bylaws that work, and turning the job security task force into action.
Powerful Locals is a great opportunity for people who want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of union leadership. We'll see you there!

The AFT Washington/Barnard Iglitzin & Lavitt Scholarship Is Open For Applications!
By Cortney Marabetta, Communications Specialist
As education workers, helping students fulfill their educational goals is a natural fit for AFT Washington. For the folks at Barnard Iglitzin & Lavitt, a Seattle-based labor law firm, it makes sense to support union members in improving labor rights for the working people of Washington. Twenty years ago, we came together and started a scholarship! In that time, we’ve awarded more than 45 scholarships to more than 40 applicants.
You’re invited to apply. If you don’t need it but you have a family member who does, they are eligible – please share with folks you know who qualify.
For the 2026-2027 school year, at least four (4) scholarships of $1500 each will be awarded to AFT Washington members, their spouses or partners, or children or dependents. The application is available on our website. These scholarships are usable for any level of higher education at any accredited institution of higher education.
Applications are due to the AFT Washington office on Monday, August 3, 2026.
